Psychological Counselling

Psychological Counselling can assist in developing various tools and approaches that will help you navigate the long-term or immediate difficulties that are influencing your wellbeing and your relationships with others. It is a judgement-free, confidential and supportive environment within which you can discuss and explore the emotional and psychological issues with which you are struggling. Psychological therapy can be hard work, but each visit will help you to build on your personal resources and assist you in recognising and accepting your stressors, while developing coping strategies to manage your psychological distress going forward.

I largely work within a cognitive behavioural framework; however I also incorporate elements of numerous other therapeutic approaches depending on the needs of each client. A brief outline of some of the approaches employed is provided below.

01

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) focuses on the relationship between an individual’s thoughts, feelings and behaviours. The aim with this style of therapy is to assist individuals to identify unhelpful thinking patterns and to understand how these patterns influence emotional states and behavioural choices. Once identified the client is then guided through strategies that encourage them to modify their thinking, change their behaviour and ultimately improve their emotional and psychological wellbeing. CBT is a constantly growing and evolving area of psychology and newer forms of therapy including Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Schema Therapy and others, are increasingly being employed by psychologists.

02

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

At the core of this therapy is the acceptance of what is not in your control and the commitment to take action for the overall improvement of your life and wellbeing. ACT aims to teach you the mindfulness skills required to recognise and manage your feelings more effectively so that they have less of an impact on your day-to-day life. This therapy will also help you identify what is most important to you and make the changes necessary to nurture these values in your life.

03

Mindfulness

Mindfulness is about paying attention, without judgement, to the present moment. The aim is to increase one’s ability to allow thoughts and feelings to come and go without feeling compelled to act on them.  It will not eliminate life's pressures, but it can help us respond to them in a calmer manner. It helps us to recognise and step away from habitual, often unconscious emotional and physiological reactions to everyday events.  Practicing mindfulness helps us to be fully present in our life and work, and improve our quality of life.

04

Interpersonal therapy (IPT)

Interpersonal therapy (IPT) focuses primarily on a person’s relationships with others and also on the way they see themselves, including within the context of their significant relationships. IPT involves intense exploration of relationship issues and the goal is to help people to identify and modify interpersonal problems while understanding and managing relationship difficulties. As with other approaches, this style involves intense self-reflection and can often result in significant changes to thinking and behaviour.

While it is important to have some understanding of the types of therapy offered, research has consistently shown that it is the quality of the relationship between psychologist and client that is the greatest predictor of successful therapeutic outcomes. As such, it is important to find a psychologist with whom you feel comfortable and are able to trust.

Rebates & Referrals

Medicare & Rebates

If you have a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) and a referral from your GP, you may be eligible for a Medicare rebate.

This significantly reduces your out-of-pocket expenses for psychological counselling.

If you have private health insurance that includes psychological counselling as extras cover you may be eligible for a partial rebate. It is recommended that you contact your individual insurance provider for further information about your individual coverage.

If you have any questions, please fill out the enquiry form or phone the Edithvale Consulting Clinic on 03 9773 4555.

Please note: many private health funds also provide rebates depending on your level of cover.

A note about confidentiality

Often it is easier to reach out and confide in someone who is detached from your social network and can help to objectively support you through your current situation. I offer one-on-one consultations in a comfortable and confidential environment. All patient records are securely filed and only accessed by me; and all enquiries are individually responded to personally.

The Australian Psychological Society (APS) Code of Ethics is strictly enforced and patient information will only be disclosed if required by law or if there is a clear and immediate threat of harm to yourself or another.

Frequently Asked
Questions

What can I expect in the first session?

A large portion of the first therapy session is usually spent discussing the issues that have brought you into therapy. As well as developing a thorough understanding of your concerns, together we will explore relevant background history, for example, information about your family, social relationships, work history and any past counselling that you have done. Based on this information we will begin to help you to understand more about what might be triggering and maintaining your current issues.

Is therapy confidential?

Yes. Everything you share in therapy is private and protected by law. The only exceptions occur when there is a concern about the safety of yourself or others, or if required by legal mandate. Your therapist will explain confidentiality (and its exceptions) with you at your first appointment.

How long does therapy last?

Session length is typically 50 minutes. The overall duration of therapy varies depending on your goals—some clients benefit from short-term support, while others prefer longer-term work. Sessions will generally be scheduled weekly to fortnightly initially, with ongoing frequency being determined by your needs and availability.

Some people come to therapy to develop coping strategies to reduce or manage symptoms of mental illness. This type of work can be short to medium term, but might also involve checking in less frequently over the longer-term to deal with setbacks or prevent relapse.

Other people come to therapy to understand long-standing patterns (such as relationship issues) that stem from experiences during their childhood, or to receive ongoing support. This type of work tends to happen over an extended period of time, although again, this is dependent on client preferences.

Sometimes people come to therapy for just a handful of sessions to speak about a specific issue in their life or to talk through a particular concern.

Do you offer Telehealth?

Yes. I provide secure online therapy sessions through a HIPAA-compliant video platform (Coviu) or simply over the phone, allowing you to access support from the comfort of your home.

Can I claim a Medicare or private health insurance rebate when I see a psychologist?

Medicare
If you have a referral from a GP or psychiatrist (with a Mental Health Care Plan) you will be eligible to receive a Medicare rebate for each session, up to 10 sessions per calendar year.

Private Health Insurance
If you have private health insurance that includes psychological counselling as extras cover you may be eligible for a partial rebate. It is recommended that you contact your individual insurance provider for further information about your individual coverage.

What is your cancellation policy?

Cancellations made with less than 24 hours’ notice will be subject to the full session fee.
